The Great Commission is the foundation for what we do to spread the Gospel. It is God’s plan and method for the church to carry the Gospel to the world.
Matthew 28:19–20 - 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Go
- The “Go” mindset is this, “I do not expect people to come to me to know Jesus, I must go take Jesus to them.”
- We are here to go to others, meet them, know them, and give them the Gospel
- We go to others just like Jesus came to us.
- We cannot expect others to come to us, we go invite them
Teach
- The first “teach” is evangelism & witnessing.
- We carry the Gospel to all nations & teach them about Jesus
- This is why this workshop exists!
- But the work doesn’t end once the Gospel is shared and a person trusts Christ
Baptize
- When someone gets saved, the first step of obedience is baptism.
- In the New Testament, this was often an almost immediate step.
- It is the act of publicly identifying with Christ and stating that “I have decided to follow Jesus”
Teach
- The second “teach” is more than teaching the Gospel, it is “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded”
- When someone gets saved, our responsibility to them has not ended
- Salvation is where a person becomes born again.
- From that point, they enter into a life-long process of spiritual maturity
- God intends for us to raise new Christians into mature Christians
- The work is completed when we teach others to observe all things that Jesus commanded.
